Biography:

Antonio Panelli - Doublebasses and Cellos maker and restorer

I’m an Italian Doublebasse and Cello maker and restorer. I’m based in Sicilia-Italy and I have a experience of more then 15 years in the “big instruments”.

When I was 14, I started to study cello and after few years also the double basse. Those 2 instruments was offering me a lot of satisfaction and at 20 I decided to enroll the Cremona Lutherie School. After graduating, I worked for 11 years in USA and Austria and after I camed back to Italy and opened my own workshop. Since I started my career as a violin-maker I have restored prestigious instruments by italian, french and german masters of different periods. Since 10 years I started to make my own models based on the “Italian flavour”. I use European wood (maple, spruce and poplar) that is being dryed for at least 12 years. The accessories are also selected with care.

Many double bass players are performing my instruments worldwide: in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, UK, USA, Italy, and so on.

Vision :

Since long time I’m searching to make my instruments easy to play in all the registers. Consider a sound that doesn't stay hidden somewhere inside but jumps out at the touch of a bow or a pizzicato. Quick response, rich basses on lower strings and clear singing upper strings describe the concept of a great tone and instrument !

No matter what kind of music you’re playing, the bass enhances the sound and makes it more beautiful and full. Charlie Haden
